VIVITROL® is a shot treatment that contains an active ingredient known as naltrexone, which works as a “blocker” for opiate cravings. This ingredient attaches to opioid receptors in the brain and prevents any positive feelings associated with opioid use.
VIVITROL® exclusively prevents pleasurable or relaxed emotions from opioid use, it does not affect the brain reaction to other naturally pleasurable activities. The blocking effect of the shot increases to a peak and slowly decreases with time.
Taking opioids while the VIVITROL® shot is in effect could to severe health consequences. Overdose of opioids can lead to hospitalization or even death.
VIVITROL® can cause side effects of their own, which include:
- Risk of opioid overdose
- Severe reactions
- Opioid withdrawal
- Liver damage
Some patients should avoid taking VIVITROL® if they are experiencing withdrawal symptoms from opioid street drugs or medicines containing opioid. Those with allergies to naltrexone or any ingredients in VIVITROL® should also abstain from the treatment.
There are also common and expected side effects from VIVITROL®. These consist of nausea, headaches, vomiting, loss of appetite, joint pain, and muscle cramps. These are treatable symptoms, but if these side effects remain prevalent for a long period, see your doctor immediately.
